簡介
檜意森活村原為日據時期，臺灣總督府營林局嘉義林場宿舍區，也是臺灣最早的林業村，也是全臺僅存保有完整聚落形式的木構建築群。日本人為開採阿里山的檜木資源，而建造阿里山森林鐵路，其起點在嘉義北門驛，火車運送下山的木材聚集在此，因此促使週邊儲木場、木材行及製材工廠遍布，進而帶動附近地區的商業發展。
在既有的舊建築物基礎下，依其原有特性規劃，結合檜町原宿成為嘉義最具特色的文化休閒園區，兼具傳統與現代林業特色之休閒遊憩空間，滿足國人休閒品質需求外，創造嘉義地區的新風貌。
