Book Description |

The exhibition, Trans-Cool Tokyo: Contemporary Japanese Art from MOT Collection features 45 art works of 18 artists from more than 4000 pieces collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT), including painting, sculpture, performance, photographs and video recordings, most of them are created from Japanese young artists. The title “Trans-Cool Tokyo” is based on Cool Japan, a term used to promote Japanese culture. However, this exhibition doesn’t just introduce the coolness of Japanese culture (the so-called pop art), but also displays the future trend of Japanese contemporary art with critical perspective. From Yayoi Kusama, Yasumasa Morimura, Takashi Murakami, and Yoshitomo Nara to new generation artists Masakatsu Takagi and Haruka Kojin, this exhibition tells the story of how Japanese artists established their own unique creativity from the global popular culture in the late 1990s.
