Book Description |
"Soliloquy as a theatrical devic e dates back to ancie nt times. According to Lloyd A. Skiffington, it ca n be found in the Greek playwrights Aeschylus, Sophocles. and Euripides. although not in large numbers. Two of its fundamental types of the time are plot-exposition and character-descriptio n, and a third. homily, was ""bo rn essen tially of Roman drama in the second century B.c."" (3· 4. II). Yet ""Medieval drama. liturgical or secular. English or Continental"" has ""litt le or no indebtednessto the wondrous classical past"" (25). When. in th e Middle Ages. the myste ry pl ay or miracl e play developed into the morality play, the characters were no longer Biblical figures but allegorical abstract ions (50). The function s of soliloqu ies remained larg ely uncha nged from cla ssical times. bu t wit h gre atly improved technique of presentation. Skiffington divides morality drama into three periods. In what he calls Early Moraliti es (ca. 1390- 1500), there is a heavy tend ency toward personification; abstract ideas and moral values become dramatic characters."
