本書一共有十二章。除了序言和導論外，全書可歸類成五部份：1).第2,4兩章的主要論述是有關中國境內和台灣的族群議題；2).第3章是討論宗族、氏族和族群的相可類比的論述。3).第5-6章是有關星加坡的多元族群和華人的關係，集中醫體系在新加坡的經營和生存策略。4).第7-9章是談論新幾內亞(PGN)的華人移民的族群認同及其和土著族群的關係。5).第10-12章則是以飲食、政治和其他物質文化來論述新近台灣的族群和政治認同的演變。
