Book Description
This book uses Peter Berg's "Literary Institutional View" and Pierre Bourdieu's "Cultural Production Field Theory" as the reference framework to explore the different "legitimacy" maintained by political and market factors in contemporary Taiwanese literary production. "Principles of Sexuality" are in conflict with each other. The book is divided into three parts: the first part introduces relatively macro issues and historical context; the second part focuses on the three literary formations of mainstream position, modernism, and nativism; the third part deals with the mid-1970s. The important changes that mainstream literature experienced between the mid-1980s and the mid-1980s, as well as the appearance of the literary field in the early days of the "post-Martial Law" period. The introduction and Chapters 1 and 2 mainly sort out the academic context and conceptual framework, as well as the interaction of political and market factors in the Taiwanese literary field. Chapter 3 first describes the correspondence between the "soft authoritarian rule" during the martial law period and the "mainstream position" in the literary field, as well as the "dominant aesthetic category" derived from it. Chapters 4 and 5 respectively focus on “modernism,” an imported aesthetic ideology that emerged in the late 1950s, and the formation of “native literature” that is in tension with mainstream literature. Chapter 6 explores the literary ecology shaped by the "Supplement", a cultural system that has long controlled the production and evaluation of Taiwanese literature, and the middle-class literary genres that flourished in the 1970s and 1980s. Chapter 7 takes the works of individual writers as examples to describe the different transformation directions of mainstream novels during this period. Chapter 8, which is the summary of the book, outlines several new development trends that emerged after the lifting of martial law: the reconstruction of local discourse, the dramatic rise of postmodern avant-garde thought, and the active adaptation of creators to market logic.
